Michael Jacobs Travel Chronicle Scholarship 2022

Applications for the Michael Jacobs Travel Chronicle Scholarship 2022 are currently being accepted.

The award is sponsored by the Michael Jacobs Foundation for Travel Writing, a non-profit organization established by Michael’s wife and brother to honor his memory and encourage travel writing in Spain and Latin America.

Following Michael Jacobs’ death in 2014, the Gabo Foundation and the Hay Festival Cartagena de Indias decided to create the Michael Jacobs Chronicle Grant Award as a legacy to the English writer, as part of decade-long cooperation.

The prize, currently in its ninth year, will award $7,500 for a book project or travel piece based in Latin America or Spain and to be published in Spanish or English.

Benefits

The winner will get $7,500 as a prize to aid in the research and writing of their article or book. Taxes paid by both the beneficiary and the convening institutions are included in the total. The scholarship will be divided into two parts: one-third ($ 2,500) when the winner is announced, and the remaining two-thirds ($ 5,000) when the project is completed and submitted to the publisher for publication.

The winner will be requested to serve on the Michael Jacobs Scholarship for Traveling Chronicles jury the following year.

If the winner so desires, the Manolo el Sereno Association (MAELSE) in collaboration with the Inquietarte Foundation, both of which are located in Frailes, will provide them with a courtesy package that includes lodging and a month’s stay in the town, though flights, food, and personal expenses are not included.

Scholarship Requirements for Michael Jacobs Travel Chronicle

  • Anyone from any country who is a journalist or writer is eligible to apply;
  • The piece must be in Spanish or English and must be on travel journalism in Latin America or Spain.

Michael Jacobs Travel Chronicle Scholarship Application

The following are the prerequisites for the application:

  • An autobiography of up to 800 words outlining your experience as a travel writer and why you are applying for the scholarship (in Spanish or English). Traditional curriculum and resumes will not be considered.
  • A comprehensive presentation of the project (essay or book) that contains project descriptions, work schedules, and trip itineraries. The essay or book must be written in one of two languages: Spanish or English.
